We just lost two more tangueras!! The complaints are the same - - no one to dance with at milongas, the cruel NYC tango scene, the time & money investment in the dance, cliques, a desire to have a non-tango social life, etc. etc.
I can't judge them too harshly. I am a tanguera that gets 'mixed' acceptance at milongas. Some milongas love me, other milongas are an exercise in futility. I know first hand what it feels like to get all 'prettied up' to dance the night away and find yourself sitting all-night long wishing you were at home in PJs with comfortable slippers.
There are a few milongas around town that I've learned to avoid. I know when I go I won't be asked to dance and when I ask someone I can expect to be treated coldly. As my friends (and teachers) drop out of tango I can't help but wonder, "Will I be next?"

Pantina

Stick with it. Maybe it'll take a culture shift in the near future, but the degree of connection that's possible is well worth the hassle.
Sounds like Sydney!! I have found that it is better to go to the milongas where you know you will be warmly welcomed... and even if you don't get many dances there are people whose company you can enjoy. It is almost masochistic to go to those where you can cut the vibes with a knife. Funnily enough I have a partner - and he can feel those vibes too!!
(begin exasperation)
is tango cruel everywhere, or just in NYC????
sigh. this is stupid and sad.
