Fallin'

There's an Alicia Keys song called "Fallin'" that describes my relationship with one popular NYC milonga:

"I keep on fallin' in and out of love with you.
Sometimes I love you.
Sometimes you make me blue.
Sometimes I feel good.
Sometimes I feel used.
Loving you darling makes me so confused."

This milonga tortures me but I can't seem to break free from it. The music is great, the venue is beautiful, the floor is smooth, and the dancers are some of the best that the TRI-STATE (not just NYC) area have to offer.

The problem.... AAAaaaccckkk....
The dancers are EXCELLENT. Their tango vocabularies aren't limited to walk, cross, rock step, ocho cortado... Oh no, they will sacada you off of this plain of existence, they will over rotate you until your torso looks like something from the "Exorcist" movie, and they will leg wrap you to the point that you may need to propose marriage at the end of the tanda. Their axis is always self-supported and perfectly balanced. And to add insult to injury - - the tangueras have some of the fastest, prettiest feet ever. These women can embellish on an eighth count note and make it look beautiful.

Usually when I go to this milonga I BYOL (bring your own lead) otherwise I run the risk of sitting all night or (heaven help me) someone asking me to dance and being afraid that I will either fall or given the "thank you" of death in the middle of the tanda because my foot work is just so-so.

This milonga serves to keep me humble. If I ever think, "Wow, I'm getting really good." One spin around this dance floor shows me that, "Umm... You're better but you aren't ready for this." This milonga also gives my privates instructor and ENDLESS pool of material to pull from when I go to her and she asks, "What would you like to work on this week?"

After a visit to this milonga I usually say, "EVERYTHING!!!"

Ciao,
Pantina

For me, an Excellent dancer is the one who will woo me by just his walk, cross, rock step, ocho cortado, change of weight on the spot, using all the fullness of the tango music.
